House Design Trends for 2024

With a new year comes new house trends that can help inform décor and design choices in the months to come. The list below includes some of the trends we can expect to see in 2024:

Colors

Design experts expect a movement away from the grays that have been so popular in recent years and into a variety of new color choices.

  • A shift towards neutral colors like earthy beiges, off-whites, or taupe and to warmer hues such as sunny yellows, turmeric-like hues, and other earthy tones like mossy greens, raisin, eggplant, or amber and even chartreuse
  • This applies to everything from paint colors to fabrics, textiles, and cabinetry
  • Pink is also still popular since the popularity of Barbie over the summer of 2023, but in home design, experts are seeing additions of softer hues like blush to accent a room with pink
  • Finally, the color of the year from Pantone is Peach Fuzz, a calming, soft peach shade, which could be popular in home décor in the year ahead
  • Utility rooms and laundry spaces have been used as a space to experiment with more vibrant colors, patterns, or wallpaper

Appreciation for the ‘70s and Antiques

  • Monastic bedroom – a more simplistic bedroom style has grown in popularity – a simple setup without fluffy duvets and tons of throw pillows. This minimalist look features fewer pillows and a bed with sheets and a quilt. Stylists say it makes the bedroom feel more serene, sleek, and clutter-free
  • ‘70s inspired colorways in wall coverings and fabrics will be popular, along with dark woods, lacquered surfaces, shaggy rugs, and low to the ground furniture. Fluted wall paneling is also making a comeback and curtains in mixed uses like doorways, as room dividers, or in place of kitchen cabinets
  • Also continuing to grow in popularity is the use of antiques and vintage pieces or things passed down from family. These pieces add personality and charm to a space and it is becoming easier to find such pieces with the availability of online stores and apps.

Ruffles, Checkerboard, Candy Cane Stripes, and Chrome

  • Ruffles are seeing a re-emergence in things like cushions or table linen that adds a bit of whimsy to the space
  • Another style gaining popularity are checkerboard patterns in things like rugs and pillows and candy cane stripes in things like curtains, cushions, and ceramics
  • Chrome will also be a popular material, not only in spaces like bathrooms or kitchens but also for side tables, lamps, or vases

Relaxed and Lived-In Spaces

  • Experts are predicting a trend moving towards relaxed, casual, and lived-in spaces like living rooms, instead of the smooth, clean, and sterile looks. This includes things like new sofa silhouettes that feature lower backs and armrests to be more comfortable. It is also predicted that people will prefer performance fabrics and rugs as well as indestructible flooring and countertops that stand the test of kids, pets, etc.
